“What were you doing when the earthquake hit?” “I was eating dinner.” 「地震が起きたとき、何をしていた?」「晩御飯を食べていたよ。」

“What did you do when the

 earthquake hit?” “I hid under the table!” 「地震が起きたとき、何をした?」「テーブルの下に避難した!」


What’s the difference between these two sentences? The first one uses the past continuous tense to talk about an ongoing action that was interrupted by something else. The second one uses the simple past to talk about things that happened one after the other.
