july23Different languages have different rules for capitalization. In English, there are several reasons to capitalize a word. The first letter of a sentence is always capitalized. The pronoun “I” and proper names of people, places, companies, animals, and other things are also capitalized.

july16On July 20, 1969, the first manned spaceship landed on the moon. On July 21, the astronauts came out and spent two hours on the moon’s surface. Their names were Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. A third astronaut, Michael Collins, went all the way to the moon, but stayed in the command module and did not get to land.

Other languages such as Spanish or German can resemble English because they are more closely related. Watch out for false cognates, though! A “home” is a house, not a train platform. A “viking” is a Norse pirate, not a buffet!

july2“The Star-Spangled Banner” is the national anthem of the U.S. They lyrics come from a poem written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key. It was about Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. The melody comes from a British song that was popular at the time.
