The cougar has many names, including “mountain lion”, “puma”, “panther” and “catamount”. It lives in most of the Americas. The biggest cat in North America, it’s more closely related to the housecat than to other big cats. Baby cougars have spots, but they lose them as they grow up.

onohara_mar26“Don’t worry, you’re not late. You’re right on time! I was just a little early.”

If you are “on time”, you arrive at the time that was planned.

“Sorry I’m late! Am I in time to see the trailers?” 「
“Yes, you only missed the ads.”

On timeより遅くてもin timeはありえます。

You can be too late to be “on time” but still arrive “in time” for something. For example you’re late to meet your friend, but the train hasn’t left yet. Or you missed the beginning of your child’s school play but not the scene that your child is in.

Also, if you are very early, you’re not “on time” but you are definitely “in time”.

On March 17, remember to wear something green! A green shirt, green socks, even a green pin or hair-tie. If students go to class without wearing anything green, they may be pinched by their classmates. This year, St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Sunday, so students could breathe a sigh of relief.

The most popular dog breed in the US (as of 2017) is the Labrador Retriever. It’s called a “retriever” because it was bred to retrieve (or bring back) birds and other animals killed by hunters. Labradors come in the colors yellow, black and chocolate.

Imagine a rocket launching into the sky. It’s going up very fast. When a number or statistic rises quickly and suddenly, we say it “skyrockets”.

vehicles700pxClassroom Tip

After the Hi, Hello Song, use this Storytime video to introduce the Happy Valley 2 Unit 1 vocabulary and target language. Before playing the video, talk about the picture, doing Picture Talk to see what students notice. After, play the Unit 1 chants and follow the lesson plan, choosing an activity students would like as follow-up. Or, before moving on to the chants, if this is a class of students is moving up from HV1 or generally a confident group, by the third lesson you can play the story once and then, as you play the video a second time, pause it after every few vehicles and see if the students can remember what the characters were looking at. In the fourth lesson, play it once through and then as you point to the vehicles, the students can pretend to be Kinka and Pinka, saying the words and making the sounds.

At Home Tip

Play the entire Happy Valley 2 Unit 1 playlist, using this Storytime video and following the Classroom Tip above to help your child learn vehicle names. Follow the tips in the chant activities to have more fun with Unit 1!

Every morning in schools across the US, small students stand up, look at an American flag displayed somewhere in the room, put their hands over their hearts and recite the Pledge of Allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.

The pledge was first written during the Civil War, but this version dates back to 1954. Now, children can choose not to say the pledge; however, they may feel pressured to say it by classmates and teachers.
