A whistleblower is someone who reports on lawbreaking or bad behavior from inside of a group. For example, if a company is doing something illegal, and one of the employees tells the authorities, that employee is a whistleblower. The word may come from a referee’s whistle in sports. “Whistleblower” has a positive connotation—protecting the public from bad actions by powerful companies or governments—compared to other words like “tattle” or “snitch”.
