The southeastern state of Alabama is called the Yellowhammer State (after its state bird) and the Cotton State (cotton is grown there). The name Alabama comes from a tribe of Native Americans who lived there. Most of Alabama is plainland, but in the north there are mountains. Southern Alabama experiences both hurricanes and tornadoes.
